Then (DPN 1988) and Now: Progress or Not? thanks to Vigilant Ally (posted on Gallynet-L)

1988: IKJ says “The students are right. Listen to them.”
2005: IKJ says “The students are wrong. Stop them.”

1988: IKJ says “We can do anything but hear.”
2006: IKJ’s actions say “We can do anything but be heard.”

1988: “It’s a civil rights issue. You have the right to self-representation.”
2005: “It’s not a civil rights issue. You don’t have the right to social justice.”

1988: “DPN isn’t just about a Deaf President. DPN is about Deaf People Now – our own empowerment, self-representation, self-determination. DPN proved we can lead ourselves.”
2006: “Never mind the empowerment or community. The Board and I know best whats good for you.”

1988: The students locked the EMGallaudet (administration) building.
2006: The administration locked the Field House (meeting place for student rally)

1988: The University Deans worked alongside with the students during the protest. Administrators and staff joined in the protest.
2006: The University Deans are intimidating the faculty, staff and students with threats. Mean-spirited administrators tell the staff to use either annual leave or LWOP if they wish to participate.

1988: Harvey Goodstein interrupted the Board Chair’s speech and encouraged everyone walk out. He became a DPN hero.
2006: Ryan Commerson interrupted the Board Chair’s speech and encouraged everyone walk out. Security threw him off campus. He became a PNG! (And still is on PNG status.)

1988: Freedom of speech and right to assemble were permitted.
2006: IKJ yells at students: “Stop protesting! Stop all this now! This is no DPN. You dishonor DPN!”

1988: The names of the 6 finalists (3 deaf, 3 hearing) were disclosed to the campus. The process included more interactions with them about the university in general.
2006: Only the names of the final 3 candidates are officially released. The process was deliberately structured around IKJ and JK Fernandes’s baby, the strategic plans.

1988: Former President Merrill implores the Board to do the right thing and choose a Deaf President.
2006: IKJ influences the Board to do the wrong thing, to ignore widespread discontent, to disregard polls results, and to choose the Wrong Deaf President.

1988: Everyone just wanted a deaf President.
2006: Everyone wants a deaf President who can respect, bring together, and lead all the diverse constituencies that Gallaudet serves, as a role model and advocate for better education for all deaf and hard of hearing students, nationally and internationally.

1988: The DC police were not alerted. Students felt peaceful, not scared.
2006: IKJ threatens students with police action and authorizes DC police to make arrests. (Note: Police stated they would not be involved in this civil rights protest.)
Security officers were stationed around campus just before the announcement of the new President was made.

1988: IKJ says “Gallaudet is a private institution subsidized by the government.”
2006: IKJ tells the protesters: “This is a federal property and you cannot lock it up.”

1988: 7th President of Gallaudet Zinser says “I thought I could be a bridge. I now realize that this is an extraordinary situation. One cannot lead without the support of the community. So I resign to make it possible for the Board to move on.”
2006: 9th President-Appointee JK Fernandes says “I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign. I will not resign.”

1988: IKJ, with 2 years as Dean as his only administrative experience, begins as President right after accepting the Board’s offer, dives in and takes over admirably.
2006: IKJ believes that it is necessary for JK to have On-The-Job Training under him for eight months before she may be capable to run the University.

1988: The community cheered the selection of Gallaudet’s new President.
2006: The community jeered the selection of JK. The community is divided, angry, distrustful, and disgusted. The polls show that a majority of faculty, students, staff and alumni find JK unacceptable. JK intensifies the division by blaming it on cultural wars instead of her failed administration and lack of visionary and charismatic leadership.

The major result of DPN was not the Deaf President himself. The major result was Respect for and Empowerment of the Deaf Person and Deaf Community, with a president we all admired and respected.

"Those Who Do Not Know the Lessons of History Are Doomed To Repeat It."
IKJ, remember your admitting your mistake in 1988 and reversing your initial support for Zinser? www.joeybaer.com
IKJ, please reverse this unfortunate situation by acknowledging it and asking JK to undo the damage and reject the Board’s offer. She will listen to only you.
Then the Board can move on to other candidates. Gallaudet can begin the healing process. The sooner, the better.

Yours for a United and Better Gallaudet,
Vigilant Ally

Questions for Washington Post

Dear Susan Kinzie and Michael E. Ruane, Washington Post Staff Writers.

I have been reading The Washington Post for the past few days and I’m truly SHOCKED to read the newspaper. Why are you so biased on this protest?

Why can't you investigate and see for yourself to see the real reason why Gallaudet Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni are protesting?  Instead of relying on Gallaudet's Press Relations office.

It is very obvious that Gallaudet Press Relations office is biased since I. King Jordan oversees them and I King Jordan has personal say in this matter.

Hire your own interpreters and interview the Gallaudet Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni leaders, DO NOT ask Gallaudet to provide interpreters for your interviews.  You will be surprised to hear what they have to say.

There are bunch of information available out in the media world exposing I. King Jordan and Jane Ferandes and you are overlooking these information.

I. King Jordan's conduct of the protest is a huge farce of its own because if he truly is what he is saying, a wise move would be simply just ordering the Board of Trustees to come back in town and let them defend the decision instead of taking the role himself and defend.

It is probably because I. King Jordan KNEW that he was not telling the truth and is covering things up.

You say that the students is protesting basis on Cultural reasons, if you had taken your time to truly interview everybody, you will definitely see a totally different reason other than what Gallaudet propaganda public relations team is telling you.

YOU as the Washington Post writer should know better that there are ALWAYS two sides of the stories, and YOU need to really investigate this story instead of relying on I. King Jordan or his followers or his PAID Staff members who are terrified of losing their jobs.

So please do your job properly and report away!

Thank you

Interesting comment by "Deaf Throat" whoever that is.. (from Gallynet-L)

Now Deaf Throat@aol.com want to respond to Public Relation send e-mail to community.
E-mail say:

There are many rumors floating and flying around campus these days. PR
intends to provide the community with facts to encounter the misinformation and
falsehoods. The hope is that when thinking people are presented with the facts
they will make decisions that are fair and informed.

FACT #1: Dr. Jordan was NEVER involved in the Presidential Search Process.
His interviews of the three finalists were at the very end of the process. A
sitting president is often asked to interview presidential finalists. His or
her [the sitting president's] feedback is an important part of the overall
information used by a Board of Trustees to make their decisions.

FACT #2: Dr. Fernandes has NO INTENTION of punishing staff members for their
involvement in the current protest.

Very good Public Relations.

But there are many other questions.
Jane may not punish staff, but Dillehay, President Jordan, bosses of staff can punish them. Nice try.
Yes, that can happen.
Good idea, but not smart Public Relations. Must agree fully to one of the demands about no one can fire staff!

Also, Why President Jordan have to go to all 3 speeches and sit in front to
make people nervous?
President Jordan must be favorite Jane because he sit
with Jane, but not with Steve or Ron?
No matter who win, but wrong process because he must be netural, but he failed because he still with Jane at the speech.

Clear that it is wrong process! Why, watch this again.

President Jordan interviewed finalists at the very end of the process,
right? That is still wrong process because he talked with them at very end of the
process mean the process did not finish and he interviewed them right before
the process really finish. It means he still involved the process.

Stop lie again. Enough! Better stop lie many times and admit you make mistakes and let us talk to the board about process again.

Let the students use the Field House. You do not own it. It belongs to
everyone. It is not against federal law and it is your own rules and federal will
respect and follow you. You make up too much. Must stop selfish and must
share with everyone, no excuse.

Administration must stop bother us during rally. No false emergency or make
up story about arrest. It looked like they broke federal laws for make up
laws or threat us for no reason if we want to have peace protest and want to
talk to the board.

DC police wants to cooperate and respect the protest and the police dont want arrest if the protestors want to peace and meet all demands. That simple and police will enjoy talk with us if administrators not make up bad happen about the protest.

Administrators want the people look bad and troublemakers, but the people still patient and cooperate well.

Thank you, the people and keep up with good spirit!

If anyone have any other tip for Deaf Throat send e-mail to that person. Make
sure to check out ridorlive.com for full information about everything that
happen.

I. King Jordan BLEW his chances!

He definitely blew his chances to ride into the sunset in blazing glory (going into retirement) due to the way he is handling this protest.

If he did NOT have any input with PSC or BOT, as a GOOD president would have done this, ordered BOT interim chair Celia to FLY back to DC without any further ado.

What did he do instead?

  • Acting like a spokesman for BOT and refusing to do anything.
  • Authorized a PNG for Ryan. (that is definitely a farce after watching the video, Ryan did NOT do anything, did not even go on the stage.) *Did I.King Jordan forget DPN of 1988?? Nobody was arrested at that stage at that time. *
  • Ordered PPD to remove the U-Haul thus causing some damage on the truck.
  • going around threating students that they will be arrested (it backfired due to DC police was wise not to interfere on this.)
  •  Interfering with meetings by various group by barging in the meetings

It is very obvious that it is I King Jordan's hand had input in the PSC and BOT due to the way he handled the whole thing.

How is it obvious?

  • Why is Jane Fernandes on the SLCC website (http://slcc.gallaudet.edu/)with many video clips?  An university would have their own students or alumni  do some speak outs on videos in supporting the new building instead Jane Fernandes was the main video person on it? This was released in Early April 2006.
  • Why did I. King Jordan order a removal of his video announcement to retire on the    Gallaudet website (probably because he has spoken his true colors in it, President Jane Fernandes oops Provost Jane Fernandes ....(UmmHmmmUmmMMM)
  • According to www.ridorlive.com
    • "Jane Fernandes’s induction to Hall of Fame: She was nominated by Irving Jordan to the Hall of Fame at her Iowa alma mater. At her induction Irving Jordan introduced her because that’s what the Iowa rules said, the nominator must introduce the nominee. And so, he introduced her as “the future President of Gallaudet University”."
Something fishy is definitely going on here....

My thoughts on Gally Protest

I would have to agree with majority's wishes about having Jane Fernandes removed as Gallaudet’s future president.

Gally would be best served by a new president who is not a current Gallaudet Faculty or Staff, in other words.. AN OUTSIDER.

WHY??

Many deans and people in other major universities (I will not name those places due to private conversations with them) currently consider Gallaudet's education as a HUGE Farce (joke).

Gallaudet University has gone completely downhill in the past 6 years. I recall while back that other Universities would compliment Gallaudet University's education but not anymore. As matter of fact, I had talked to several Deans of other universities and they praised Gallaudet's education and THOSE same deans are NOT supporting Gally's education anymore.

An Outsider would be the best choice to be a president candidate for Gallaudet. I am NOT saying I support Stern or ANYBODY at the moment, I just want to see who is the BEST candidate when the presidential search committee starts again and HOPE more candidates apply for the job, before I make any decision on who to support.

I. King Jordan would be wise to back off on his refusal to re-open the presidential search and keep his personal agenda OUT of the presidential search. He needs to allow presidential search committee to do their job and Board of Trustees to vote on PSC's recommendation without I.King Jordan's input. It would be the best for all if he does NOT show up at the Board of Trustee’s meeting to allow true discussion and proclaim future president of Gallaudet University.
